Assault Suit Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute brings the side-scrolling mech shooter west for the first time

It’s been a long time coming, but 90s shooter Assault Suit Leynos 2 finally has a port for western audiences, and it’s out now.

Blast ’em

It’s not entirely atypical, when you consider the industry of the 90s, that you find games that didn’t have western console releases. They were two demonstrably different markets at the time after all, and some titles just never made the leap to one or the other. And yes, Assault Suit Leynos 2 was such a title.

The sequel to the original, which did see a western launch for the Sega Genesis (as Target Earth), Assault Suit Leynos 2 was released for the Japanese version of the Saturn in 1997. While it looked a heck of a lot better, the game was very much in keeping with the original, offering side-scrolling action where players piloted a mech suit against hordes of foes. But unlike that first game, the followup never got a port.

Well, fast forward to the year 2025, and Assault Suite Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute is finally here, and playable for (some) modern platforms.

Set in the year 2123 AD, players are thrust into a space-faring conflict that’s hit boiling point, following the assassination of a high-ranking politician. The weapon of choice in this alternate future is the Assault Suit, a humanoid robotic weapon, and players will take charge of the 12th Special Assault Suits Squad in a fight against a relentless mechanized army.

Clear River Games press release

Along with the base game, Assault Suit Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute hosts the full suite of modern ‘retro’ niceties. That includes language localization, a rewind feature, quick saving and loading, button config, and even a rapid fire function. Additionally, genre fans can look for what sounds like an ‘easy mode’, with “Increased Durability”, a hint function, and what’s referred to as a “Boost”. While we’re not totally sure what that is, the press release says it “gives you the lift you need, adding further strategic opportunities.” So make of that what you will.

If all of that sounds good to you, then you’ll be thrilled to know that Assault Suit Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute is out right now digitally for the PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. For those who prefer a physical edition too, don’t worry, because it’s on the way. You can expect that to arrive for the above consoles on May 25th.

And no, before you ask, there’s nary an Xbox or PC version to be found. We’ll let you know if that changes.
