Last seen years ago, My Arcade’s Super RetroChamp handheld is finally back on track and looking like a slick 16bit option.
The Champ lives
If the Super RetroChamp name sounds familiar, there’s a reason. The handheld retro player was last seen at CES in 2020, the last Consumer Electronics Show before the pandemic-related lockdowns. And like most of the world, the unit basically vanished for a while afterwards.
The console disappeared for around five years, until this currently running CES, which has seen retro-themed company My Arcade revive it. My Arcade says that’s basically due to fans continually asking about it too. So if you’re among that number, feel free to give yourself a pat on the back, because the little machine has indeed returned and is looking better than ever.
For use with classic SNES/Super Famicom and Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges, the Super RetroChamp allows for play on the go by way of its 6″ screen. Not to worry if you prefer playing on a television though, as the portable is right at home doing that too, though we didn’t notice anywhere to plus in a controller, so you might need to grab a lengthy HDMI cable.
The Super RetroChamp also comes with a built-in kickstand for (presumably) tabletop action, and you won’t have to invest in a couple hundred AA batteries either. This little guy is rechargeable for “hours of uninterrupted gameplay”, according to My Arcade.
There’s no release date listed for the Super RetroChamp just yet, but it does sounds like it’ll be heading to retail sooner than later. When it does land for purchase, it’ll be priced in at $149.99 USD.
