Bethesda releases statement on still-cancelled QuakeCon 2022

Yes, QuakeCon is canceled once again, and that’s not going to be rethought. To that end though, there’s a very good reason why the show can’t go on.

The Con ain’t on

Caught up in the pandemic that encircled the globe in 2020 and ’21, QuakeCon was one of many shows cancelled in that time. SDCC, NYCC, Toy Fair, the PAX’ and the Con in question were all canned. While there were ‘virtual’ components that did roll onward for most of the above, none were substitute for the real thing.

Now here in 2022, shows are being restarted. While we had no Toy Fair in February, that same show will be reinstated for this fall, and so far it looks like the big comic cons will be happening as well. But while those will likely happen, QuakeCon definitely will not.

And there’s a very good reason for that (that doesn’t include Covid). Scroll on down for the full statement from Bethesda.

Hi,

This year’s QuakeCon will once again be a digital-only event, August 18-20, 2022.

Like you, we’re disappointed to not return to Dallas this year. An event of this size requires months of planning, and in this case, we had to make decisions when there was still too much uncertainty to commit to successfully executing an in-person QuakeCon.

The QuakeCon team is already working hard to put together exciting new streaming programming, online meetups, giveaways, charity opportunities, the virtual BYOC, and more, and we will announce more details in June.

We’re committed to returning with our full in-person festival in 2023, and already looking forward to reconnecting with friends, a massive BYOC packed with your latest custom PC creations, our wild contests, and tons of great new games and hardware for attendees to try out.

We can’t wait to see you online this August and in-person next year.

Thanks,
Renee
