Get an in-depth look at the new Bard’s Tale IV in today’s developer preview

The Bard’s Tale hasn’t been seen for a while now. The series is poised to make a serious comeback however, with a fresh title from inXile dubbed The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep. And this one is going to take the franchise back to the beginnings of the genre.

Barrows Deep

Did you play the last game in the Bard’s Tale series? If you did, then you have some idea of what to expect here. Kind of. Whit, humor, and a deep quest are all still highlights. But something has changed significantly from that game to this one, and that’s the engine.

Gameplay this time around will be of a much more classic variety. That’s right, The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep is a dungeon crawler. Played in a first person perspective, the game will throw players into a series of turn-based battles. The quest will have them making their way through a “vast world of tactical action, puzzles, quests, and choices”.

And if that’s not enough Bard-y goodness for you, then you’ll be happy to know that inXile also revealed a slate of collector’s editions for the game today. All pre-orderable via the newly overhauled website, there will a total of four CE’s for players to choose from.

Whichever you pick though, will include extras. Although if you’re a big enough fan, you might want to grab either the Platinum or Ultimate Editions. The former there will give you access to the beta, while the latter grants both that and access to the alpha. So you can get an early jump on the quest.

No release date as of yet for this one, but The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep  is expected to hit the PC some time this year.
