Tetris gets the axe from the eShop in the UK

According to Joystiq, GameBoy classic Tetris is getting the heave-ho form the eShop on the 3DS this New Year’s Eve, along with Tetris Axis.

Firstly, it’s unclear as to what’s actually happening here. Are the games being pulled globally, or just in the UK? Are they going to resurface at some point or is this it for them? And most importantly, does any of this have to do with the recently released Tetris Ultimate from Ubisoft? Odds are that it does, though no one’s really saying anything one way or the other right now.

All that is 100% apparent, is that two Tetris titles will vanish from the UK eShop this New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight, as that’s been confirmed by Nintendo. And one of them’s a classic.

The GameBoy edition of Tetris was, in my opinion, one of the best ever released. It was simple, clean, and easy to play- though devilishly difficult at times. I poured hours upon hours into that game when it was released alongside the green and greyscale handheld years ago and it still ranks pretty high on my all time list of portable games. If you haven’t tried it, I recommend you do. It sure ain’t flashy, but it is fun.

So if you’re in the UK (or anywhere else) and would rather be safe than sorry, then you might want to buy a copy now.
