IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is already a hit, with 300k copies ordered

One run ends, while another kicks off, as publisher IDW’s new TMNT ongoing launches into a July release with a 300k copy lead.

While the mean green turtle teens might’ve just closed out a run with publisher IDW, the property isn’t done yet, not by a long shot. The company is about to launch a full-on reboot of the comic, with July’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1.

While we don’t know a heck of a lot about the book just yet, it certainly looks as though it’ll be taking the TMNT back to their origins. Well, to a degree anyway. The covers that we have seen thus far have included the four brothers, as well as a look at what we assume are a black-clad version of the Foot Clan. Though that same illustration has Raphael framed by a fearsome prison (and warden?). Yep, when TMNT #1 opens, Raph is in the clink, though again we couldn’t say why.

What we can say, is that the title has a creative team that includes modern superstar Jason Aaron. If you somehow don’t recognize that name, Aaron has previously written both Batman and Thor comics, as well as plenty more. Picking up the art chores for issue #1 will be another big name with Joëlle Jones, who’ll be joined by two TMNT vets, colorist Ronda Pattison and letterer Shawn Lee.

Eisner Award-winning writer Jason Aaron (Batman: Off-WorldThor: The God of Thunder) is humbled by the enormous response to the upcoming comic and immensely appreciative. “Thank you to all the retailers and fans out there for believing in what we’re cooking up with this new series and for supporting the book in such a massive way,” stated Aaron. “There are so many cool covers to choose from, and this summer there’ll be loads of pizza parties and big events all over the country revolving around this launch and the 40th anniversary of the Ninja Turtles. But at the end of the day, I’m mostly just excited for people to hold the book in their hands and see Joëlle‘s incredible art and read the beginning of what should be a crazy fun ride of a story.”

IDW press release

As mentioned that first issue has already put up some impressive numbers. IDW reports that orders have broken 300k, which is a pretty lofty number for the modern industry. Don’t expect this series to lack variation either, as each of the first four issues will shift focus to a different Turtle, and a different artist.

Jones will take #1 on July 24th, but from there it’s Rafael Albuquerque for a Michelangelo tale in #2. Leonardo features in issue #3, from artist Cliff Chiang, and Donatello rounds things out with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4. Look for the talented pencils of Chris Burnham to star in that one.

About Jason Micciche

Jason's been knee deep in videogames since he was but a lad. Cutting his teeth on the pixely glory that was the Atari 2600, he's been hack'n'slashing and shoot'em'uping ever since. Mainly an FPS and action guy, Jason enjoys the occasional well crafted title from every genre.
