Starship Troopers: Extermination updates with new weather system and more

The war’s not over yet Trooper. Co-op FPS Starship Troopers: Extermination has a fresh update, with more on the way.

I’m doing my part

Still enjoying a resurgence is Starship Troopers, Robert Heinlein’s classic tale of a future Earth embroiled in an interstellar war with voracious and insidious insects. Starship Troopers: Extermination is one of the newest titles to take advantage of the property, landing for consoles and the PC last fall. The action title serves up a heaping helping of first-person warfare against the bugs, with a co-op bent.

Things aren’t done yet for the game though, as developer Offworld Industries has unveiled the arrival of a brand new update (1.3). And it’s no slouch, bringing in some pretty big new elements. For one thing, the game now has day/night and weather cycles, plus “staged weapon reloads”, and a host of quality of life improvements.

You can check out the full update notes here on the game’s official page, but here’s the long and the short of how update 1.3 shakes out:

  • Dynamic Sky & Weather System – Valaka, Boreas, and Agni Prime now feature Day & Night cycles and Dynamic Weather, creating an ever-changing battlefield for troopers. Each planet has unique weather systems, adding new challenges. The Sandstorm Mutator has been revamped with varying intensities, from mild to blinding. New Extreme Weather Mutators include thunderstorms, blizzards, and ashstorms, making survival even tougher.
  • Staged Weapon Reloads – No more frustrating interruptions! All weapons (except the Sp.L.I.T Shotgun and Sp.L.I.T Shotgun Slug) now feature progressive reload stages. If you’re forced to stop reloading mid-combat, you’ll resume from the last checkpoint rather than starting over.
  • Quality-of-Life Enhancements:
    • XP for Disconnections – Players will now earn XP if they disconnect due to crashes or server issues—traitors, however, won’t be so lucky.
    • Improved Company System – Invite friends to your company directly from their profile or request to join a company, even without an invitation.
    • Key Optimizations & Bug Fixes – Smoother combat, better performance, and a more polished experience.

More to come

While update 1.3 is indeed here as of today for the game, Starship Troopers: Extermination still has more on the way. Scheduled to launch later this year is update 1.4, which will include the first of a new line of weapon attachments. While that drop will come packed with the Underbarrel Attachment for Morita MK1, Offworld says that this update will open the game up for more, specifically both the MK2 & MK3.

That’s not all there will be in 1.4 though, as players will get the brand new option of becoming a war reporter. No, seriously, you will actually be able to recover a Federal Network Broadcast Camera while playing, and film the battles to boost Morale XP. How cool is that?

There’s no word on when we might expect to see this second announced update, but here are the notes on update 1.4, as they stand now:

  • Underbarrel Attachment for Morita MK1 – A highly requested feature is finally making its way into the arsenal, opening the door for future Morita MK2 & MK3 upgrades.
  • Broadcast Heroism System – Become a Federation war reporter! Recover Federal Network Broadcast Cameras on the battlefield and capture the chaos to boost your squad’s Morale XP. Side objectives in ARC and Horde modes will now feature these thrilling recording opportunities.
  • And many more updates and Quality-of-Life Enhancements
