The famed Notre-Dame cathedral is reopened in Paris, and you can take a virtual trip there thanks to VR headsets.
Unity
Is there a more iconic Catholic landmark than Notre-Dame? Outside of the Vatican itself, we’re going to say ‘no’. The massive cathedral has stood for almost 900 years, weathering its fair share of troubles in that time. The French Revolution saw severe damage dealt to its contents, and the fire in 2019 caused portions of its roof to collapse.
Not that the blaze would affect it for long, as restoration has just been completed, bringing the house of God back to its full glory. This past weekend actually saw a celebration take place in the city of lights, but while that was an exclusive event, gaming publisher Ubisoft is looking to take its fans there virtually.
Working with Meta as well as Institut Français and Micro-Folies, the company has a host of Notre-Dame happenings set to take place. First up is that virtual reality trip to the building, thanks to Meta VR and Assassin’s Creed Unity. If you remember, 2014’s AC title took place in Paris, and of course has a version of Notre-Dame in it. That has been “reworked” according to Ubi, into Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time VR.
The newly minted VR experience (which does not include a copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity) is free to download from the Meta store, and is just the start of the festivities. Thanks to the collaboration with Institut Français and Micro-Folie, the app will be featured in both “their network or in partner museums across the world”, according to the press release.
That’s not all though, as the Notre-Dame visitors app is getting in on the AC fun too, with what sounds like some interesting upgrades. Ubisoft is providing “illustrations of several inaccessible or historical points of interest” for that, and according to the publisher, will be in the form of “3D views of the cathedral, as it appeared in the game Assassin’s Creed Unity.”
While we’re not sure about the availability of the museum apps, Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time VR is out right now for Meta headsets.
