Prepare to get immersed in the world of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, with some interesting new audio elements.
You hear that?
Game audio, really in any generation, has taken a backseat to graphics. It’s pretty easy to see why that’d be the case, since it’s a visual medium, but it’s still a fact that’s worth talking about since it’s also something that’s improved massively over the years. We’re kind of at the point after all, where sound elements and voice acting in video games can rival feature films.
To that end, today’s Call of Duty blog gets into some very cool stuff that Black Ops 6 will be offering up for fans later this month. Said “new stuff” includes 3D Soundscapes, which target giving the player a much more realistic and nuanced auditory experience while in the game’s world.
The official blog spoke with Lead Audio Designer Collin Ayers and Expert Audio Engineer William Cornell to explore the new tech that’ll be delivering that audio, complete with some neat examples. Fans who click on over to the blog will see just how “Spatial Reverb” will affect play, as well as get the lowdown on how the first-person shooter will actively prioritize sounds while playing. In some instances it doesn’t seem to be that massive of a change honestly, but with elements like footsteps… yeah, it’s kind of impressive.
Along with all of that, Black Ops 6 will also sport Head Related Transfer Function, a wild-sounding function available via the game’s headphone mode. Fans can also expect the title to boast accessibility support for those with hearing impairments, plus Project Acoustics. What’s that? It’s the modeling of “complex wave physics” in a 3D environment. As we mentioned, this is cool stuff.

The game is on track for release on modern Xbox and PlayStation platforms, plus PC this month, landing on October 25th.
