Atari revives post-apocalyptic battle/racer Fatal Run 2089

A niche racer from the golden age of Atari’s consoles, Fatal Run 2089 brings the title back for more all-out racing action.

Running hot

You might not know the name “Fatal Run” right off the top of your head. The original game was launched way back in the 80s, for the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles, and it only hit the market in Europe. Yeah, that’s pretty niche, but it’s not going to stop Atari from reaching back and mining that title for a brand new game. Looking pretty fantastic in this first-look trailer, Fatal Run is officially being reborn as Fatal Run 2089.

A full on battle/racer from developer MNSTR Studio, Fatal Run 2089 looks stunning as it runs in Unreal Engine 5, and features a pretty neat story/gameplay mechanic. The game takes place in the aftermath of a comet strike, and this is a post-apocalyptic future where racers play a big part. Namely, they have to shuttle “advanced clean energy devices” between remaining settlements.

But it’s not quite so simple, as drivers have to keep the pedal to the metal in order to charge those devices, which lose energy with every passing moment.

In the aftermath of a comet collision that bathed Earth in deadly radiation, humanity’s remnants have formed fierce factions of wasteland warriors. In Fatal Run 2089, you join a courageous group of scientists known as the ‘Engineers.’ Your critical mission: transport ARCs—advanced clean energy devices designed to purify the atmosphere—to essential population hubs worldwide.

Atari press release

Featuring “four diverse landscapes”, boss fights, “arcade-style challenges” to engage with, and the ability to upgrade and modify your ride, Fatal Run 2089 is coming to PC and consoles some time in 2025.
