SDCC ’24: Dark Horse celebrates 30 years of Hellboy with four Con exclusives

Hellboy fans heading to Comic Con next week will want to check out Dark Horse’s booth, and grab some of the exclusives on hand.

Hellacious

Creator Mike Mignola’s Hellboy has been around… for a long time. While it might not seem like it, Big red and his ever-expanding universe of horrors debuted three decades ago, with October 1994’s Seed of Evil. Well, technically he debuted a year before that, in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2. And in that case, it’s quite fitting that publisher Dark Horse is celebrating his big 3-0 at this year’s event.

A set of four SDCC exclusives will be on hand for fans to purchase, including a special edition of his origin story, Hellboy Seed of Destruction #1 30th Anniversary Convention Exclusive Variant. That’ll be joined by a special art print that brings Hellboy together with other legendary indie heroes The Goon and Usagi Yojimbo. Want more? Well, okay, there’s also a special Pinfinity set and a Hellboy Letterpress Print Set, crafted in conjunction with Austin Texas’ The Print Room.

Check out the full details below, and then make sure to hit the Dark Horse booth on the show floor to grab yours.

  • Hellboy Seed of Destruction #1 30th Anniversary Convention Exclusive Variant is a special edition of the first issue of Hellboy that depicts his arrival on earth in the midst of WWII, the return of his adoptive father from a failed Arctic expedition, and Hellboy’s first encounter with Mike Mignola’s infamous frog monsters. This special edition of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1 is printed as uncolored line art and features an updated line art cover, a bonus section with more than 20 sketches, and digital codes for Seed of Destruction #1-4!
  • Mike Mignola, Stan Sakai, and Eric Powell each draw their iconic characters on The Goon, Hellboy, and Usagi Yojimbo Anniversary Print, which is painted by Powell. Measuring 18 inches x 24 inches and limited to 300 units, this gorgeous commemorative piece showcases three of comics most enduring creator-owned heroes.
  • The augmented reality Hellboy 30th Anniversary Pinfinity Set features three detailed enamel pins depicting Mike Mignola’s iconic artwork including: Hellboy 30th Anniversary, Crowned Knight Skeleton, and Giant Robot Hellboy. Fans can explore the legendary comic series like never before by scanning the pins with the Pinfinity app to unlock comic pages, animated content, and more.
  • In artwork, chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrast in light and dark. Few artists have mastered the technique as skillfully as Mike Mignola, whose work is as effective in black and white as it is in color. This is why Dark Horse has partnered with The Press Roomin Austin, TX on a run of specialty crafted Hellboy Letterpress Print Sets. This bundle of five (5) 4-inch by 6-inch prints features black and white Hellboy illustrations by Mike Mignola printed on an original 1955 Vandercook 219AB press on heavy 100lb cover stock. Limited to just 666 sets available, this gorgeous collection comes complete with a hand-numbered, letterpress printed, red belly-band.

The Hellboy Seed of Destruction #1 30th Anniversary Convention Exclusive Variant is a limited Edition of 1500 copies for $25 and is limited to 5 copies per person per day. Limited to 300 copies, The Goon, Hellboy, and Usagi Yojimbo Anniversary Print is $50. The Hellboy 30th Anniversary Pinfinity Set and the Hellboy Letterpress Set are both $40
