The retro-renaissance for the beat ’em up genre continues this fall, adapting a classic series of films in The Karate Kid: Street Rumble.
Wax on, wax off
We’ve seen some very good to excellent beat ’em ups in recent years. It’s been nothing short of a renaissance for what was formerly one of the biggest of genres, which was all but completely dormant for a long time. From what we’ve seen of the recently announced The Karate Kid: Street Rumble too, it looks like that roll won’t be slowing down just yet.
A traditional side-scrolling action title in the classic mold, the game slips players into the shoes of either star character Daniel LaRusso, his marital arts master Mr. Miyagi, Ali Mills, or Kumiko. Now, if you’re a fan of the original movies, you might be wondering what this upcoming game adapts exactly, since not all of those characters starred in the same flick.
The answer is pretty simple though, and it’s all of ’em. While the game won’t get into the recent TV series that is Cobra Kai, The Karate Kid: Street Rumble digs into all three of the original movies. And as you’ll see in the trailer below, it does so with what looks to be some pretty sharp style.
Set in the iconic locations of the first three classic The Karate Kid movies, The Karate Kid: Street Rumble lets you step out of the dojo and into the streets of the 1980s San Fernando Valley and Okinawa. Battle waves of challenging enemies in this fast-paced, side-scrolling beat ’em up adventure, brought to life with colorful pixel-art visuals and chiptune music.
GameMill press release
The Karate Kid: Street Rumble will feature 12 levels of play, where fans can engage a horde of foes in either solo or co-op style, battling with combos and signature moves. Fans can expect to go toe-to-toe with all the big series’ villains too, with Johnny Lawrence, John Kreese, and Terry Silver all included.
Battle your way from the beautiful San Fernando Valley to old Okinawa, when The Karate Kid: Street Rumble arrives on the Switch, PC, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles this September the 20th.
