Marvel Comics’ original trilogy series of comics is seemingly about to finish up, with two Star Wars ‘grand finales’.
Number 50
Marvel has, and we’re not really sure this is arguable, explored quite a bit of Lucas’ galaxy with its Star Wars comics. We’re not judging quality mind you, as that’s more or less subjective, but it’s tough to say that the publisher hasn’t done a ton with the license. From the moment it welcomed Star Wars into the portfolio, Marvel has had no shortage of comics hitting the racks, bringing original the cast of the classic films back to fans.
First setting its stories in the period between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, Marvel subsequently shifted that focus to the era between the next two films. Adding in a bunch of new plot lines that were including major ‘events’ and crossovers, Marvel managed to explore a ton of fresh angles with Luke Skywalker and co.
But after five years of action in the pre-Return of the Jedi years, that run is coming to a close. The era will end this September, with 50th issues of both Star Wars and Star Wars: Darth Vader.
- Both finale issues will be fifty-page extravaganzas! In Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov’s STAR WARS #50, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker must teach his student Ben Solo a powerful lesson about the true balance between Light and Dark! He offers up a tale from the days of the Rebel Alliance that touches on multiple eras of Star Wars history, and brings this epic run to a thrilling, incredible climax!
- Then, acclaimed writer Greg Pak closes out the longest-running Darth Vader comic series ever alongside artist Raffaele Ienco and more in STAR WARS: DARTH VADER #50. Pak’s run reaches its stunning conclusion as the Dark Heart of the Sith comes full circle! Darth Vader finally unleashes the unfathomable power he’s accumulated through the Schism Imperial against the only person in the galaxy he hates more than he hates himself – Emperor Palpatine! Also featuring the final twists in the saga for key characters like Luke, Leia, Sabé, Ochi, the droid ZED-6-7, Sly Moore, the members of the Schism Imperial and more!
Look for Star Wars #50 to hit the stands on September 11th (2024), followed by Star Wars: Darth Vader #50 on September 18th. After these releases however, it’s not clear exactly what’s next for Star Wars at Marvel Comics. From the sounds of things though, this time-period is officially coming to a close.
So if you’re a fan, you might want to make sure these two books get on your pull-list.
