Scaring up a launch in time for Halloween, Atari’s Haunted House reboot is out now

A classic returns, in a whole new form and in time for All Hallow’s Eve, with Atari’s recreation of 80s adventure title Haunted House.

BOO

The spookiest season of the year might be coming to a close, but Atari has just released a scare-fest to make sure it goes out with a ‘boo’. That, as you can see from the headline, is Haunted House, a game that reinvents a classic from the Atari 2600 days. This one goes way back to the year 1982, but as you’ll see in the trailer below, this new version looks nothing like that original.

A procedurally generated game, Haunted House features a shifting mansion layout, so every play-through should feel relatively new. There’s also seemingly no combat, as Lyn doesn’t pack any ghost-smashing hardware. Instead she’ll have to “creep, sneak, and dash” past specters, and find clever ways to defeat bosses.

A tribute to the classic Atari 2600 game, considered the first-ever survival horror title, Haunted House presents a 3D isometric adventure in a spooky mansion filled with colorful characters. In the game, players take control of Lyn Graves, the precocious niece of legendary treasure hunter Zachary Graves. Lyn visits her uncle’s mansion with her closest friends, only to find the massive house overrun with ghouls and monsters who quickly grab and spirit away her friends. To free her uncle and her friends, Lyn must find the shattered pieces of a magical urn and put them back together.

Atari press release

Haunted House is out right now, both physically and digitally for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and the Switch. It’s out for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One as well, though those versions are just in digital form.
