Gamescom 23: Take a trip back to 9th century Baghdad in the latest look at Assassin’s Creed Mirage

The newest adventure in the long-lived Assassin’s Creed series isn’t far off now, and Mirage’s vision of Baghdad is looking great.

I actually like sand

If you’ve played Assassin’s Creed games for any length of time, there are things in this new look at Assassin’s Creed Mirage that will instantly strike a chord. We don’t mean stuff like wielding swords and striking with hidden blades either, as those are common across the series.

Little things though, sprinkled into the game, should bring to mind AC games like Origin and the original Creed. Though they took place in radically different places and times, there are some similarities here and there, in this new vision of the old Middle East.

Just fair warning before you hit ‘play’ below, depending on your native tongue, you might have to flip on the closed captioning.

In Assassin’s Creed Mirage, you are Basim, a cunning street thief with nightmarish visions, seeking answers and justice. After an act of deadly retribution, Basim flees Baghdad and joins an ancient organization – The Hidden Ones. As he learns their mysterious rituals and powerful tenets, he will hone his unique abilities, discover his true nature, and come to understand a new Creed – one that will change his fate in ways he never could have imagined.

Ubisoft press release

How great does that look? Maybe it’s us, but there’s just something about the middle-eastern setting that makes an AC game seem that much cooler. Ninth century Baghdad seems uber-detailed as well, with plenty of life to it. That’s kind of a stark difference to the tasks that main-character Basim will be carrying out. After all, it’s called “Assassin’s Creed” for a reason.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is also right around the corner at this point, and is set to debut on consoles and the PC on October 5th, 2023.
