E3 2019: Battletoads returns with an animated look

A very different-looking Battletoads is making its way back to the video game universe. Microsoft unveiled the first look at it yesterday.

Battlin’ toads

Is there a more difficult side-scroller than the original Battletoads? Probably, but the classic has made a name for itself in retro circles for being tough to beat.

That doesn’t look to be changing at all with the new version of the game, coming from Rare and Microsoft exclusively for the Xbox One. There’s more that is very different though, and by that I mean the look.

The series has never been “realistic” by any means, though now it’s sporting a more CalArts style. If you don’t know what that means, it’s basically the style showcased by many a TV cartoon these days. The rest seems to be pretty staple Battletoads though in terms of gameplay. So even if you’re not a fan of the animation form, you might still dig the Toads.

Have a look:

As you might’ve guessed, Battletoads features three-player co-op. It’s drop-in and out too, so you’re not chained to playing any particular way, even if you start the game with a pal.

Battletoads will be a part of Xbox Game Pass, as well as for sale in the usual manner. It’ll presumably be arriving some time this year, though there’s no date as of yet.
