Westworld Season 2 Returns To HBO This April

Westworld Season 2’s long-anticipated release date was revealed via the show’s Twitter account this morning.

HBO’s philosophically driven Sci-Fi Western makes its triumphant return April 22, 2018.

If you haven’t seen the first season of Westworld, you need to get on board HBO’s new flagship series. In addition to taking inspiration from Michael Crichton’s 1973 sleeper hit, Westworld explores several philosophically relevant themes in present human society. Especially relevant themes including the basis of conscious individualism, the morality of having a consequence-free world, and humanity’s fast-paced adaption of AI. Westworld’s well-executed exploration garnered the show well-deserved critical acclaim. Westworld took a year-and-a-half hiatus from its December 2016 season one finale due to the showrunner’s desire to match the first season’s high bar of quality.

Some noteworthy scenes sprinkled in the Westworld Season 2 trailer hinted at the direction of several returning characters. It seems like Dolores, Teddy, and the Man in Black appear determined to free Westworld’s hosts from the park’s violent guests. Meanwhile, Maeve continues the search for her daughter, driven by past trauma inflicted upon her by the Man in Black. Maeve does this while determining her own capacity for free will and whether or not her programming dictates her desires. Bernard has sided with Westworld’s human staff for the moment due to his own identity crisis. The brilliant programmer strides amongst the staff’s encampments as they prepare for the onslaught of self-aware android hosts.

Westworld Season 2’s premise appears centered around the developing conflict between the human staff and the self-aware hosts. Fans of Westworld finally have some answers about Season 1’s cliffhanger finale. Mentions of Westworld’s coolest easter eggs were conspicuously absent from the official trailer reveal. The possibility of a Samurai World and the human society outside of the Westworld theme park were the most notable exemptions. It appears that these plotline’s relevance in Westworld Season 2 will be revealed once the show returns.
