The Gears of War franchise is one of notable repute and 19 September 2016 marks the release of the official gameplay launch trailer of its fifth installment. The trailer is brilliant and if you haven’t seen it you can view it here. Gears of War 4 is scheduled to be released 11 October 2016. Here’s our rundown of the trailer:
Destruction of Imulsion
The trailer opens with the conclusion of Gears of War 3, in which we can see the effects of the weapon Marcus’s father created that destroyed all the Imulsion on planet Sera. The destruction of Locust and Hambent monsters is played out as we see the wave hitting each creature. The detonation of the weapon resulted in the destruction of all fossil fuels and the near extinction of the human population, as well as the creation of ‘windflares’, a combination of hurricane and tornado weather effects.
25 Years Later
Taking place 25 years after the destruction of Imulsion and the Lambent pandemic, the scene cuts to what is assumed as a post-Locust War era Outsider Camp. The Outsider camps were formed by humans who chose to live outside the city walls of the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments). Kait Daiz, daughter of Reyna Daiz who was an Outsider leader, is introduced as one of the new characters in this post-war era. We see Kate staring off into the distance of the Outsider camp as a mysterious shadow passes by the Outsider camp.
Kidnapping in the First Degreee
Utter chaos ensues after we’re introduced to Kait: snapshots of the camp being attacked by Snatchers plays out while the villagers panic and take shelter. Snatchers are assumed to be part of the Swarm and kidnap Outsiders. We witness the kidnapping of Oscar, Kait’s uncle, in the midst of the chaos. J.D. Fenix, son of Marcus Fenix, takes shelter with Kait as the scene cuts to Kait’s mother being thrown around by what looks to be a Scion. The scene fades as we see the hand of the Scion reach towards the screen and can only assume that Reyna has been kidnapped by the Swarm. The Swarm is presumed to be the new threat, a group of creatures that oppose the humans.
Marcus Narrates
The introduction begins as Marcus narrates the events that are about to unfold. The “storm” he makes reference to can be assumed as the new threat of windflares. The degree and effects of the windflares play out. They’re monstrous clouds of dust and lightening, coupled with disastrous winds. J.D. and Del are seen suiting up in the armory, along with Kait; she is confirmed as one of the playable characters once the game is released.
Badassery, Badassery Everywhere
We’re greeted with an array of creatures attacking the group and gratuitous amounts of badass-ary. There are explosions, guns, motorcycles and intimidating stingers involved. The badass-ary is followed by copious scenes of Marcus Fenix presumably getting injured, attacked and dying (let’s hope not!). Shots of the new enemy, who seems to be a mutant of some sort (who looks a lot like a Locust) plays out followed by Augustus ‘Cole Train’ Cole who makes a cameo appearance. We have giant mechas, tentacles and more explosions involved before the scene concludes with the group entering a building, guns ready.
Conclusion: Epically Brilliant
So to sum up, the trailer is amazing by epic proportions with just the right amounts of mystery and emotion to keep you guessing. The focus is on J.D. Fenix in this installment and we can assume the plot will follow the search for Reyna Daiz while unearthing a mysterious, but massive, threat.
