Overwatch Is Getting Competitive

Overwatch is the fresh, new IP from Blizzard and has been received with open arms by gamers everywhere. However, Blizzard is looking to expand the game modes already available, by adding a more competitive mode.

Competitive play will be a far more serious experience for players. This new mode will have the benefit of leaderboards and seasons to get the competition going. As mentioned, seasons will be introduced. Such seasons will have a length of 3 months, giving time for players to see progression. Doing so allows players to see where their headed and to test their skills against people in their field.

Stages will be modified to suit this new competitive mode. Such assault maps like; Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries will last a little longer. The problem with these particular maps was that there were only two key fights and that’s it. Within the competitive mode, these maps will have more back and forth gameplay, allowing for some more team fights and clutch moments.

On a gameplay perspective, moments like “overtime” and “sudden death” will be reduced. This is to make sure that these moments are rare and amp up the overall value of competitive play. “Sudden death” and “overtime” pushes players to perform at their best to secure the win. These are tension filled moments that really does elevate the teamwork and gameplay on display. In addition, “sudden death” will be resolved on the map that you are currently playing.

With regards to the league system, there will be no tiers and be based on a matchmaking rating (MMR). Thus a score of 1-100 will be awarded after your placements to show your skill rating. From there, your matchmaking will revolve around people with similar skill. Also, when in a match, you can see everyone’s skill level and those whom are playing with someone or going solo. As a result, this all culminates into a fairer yet competitive online experience.

With competitive mode becoming available soon, this will provide players that competition they are seeking. At the current time, quick play is the main way to play allowing players to just have fun. In short, for those that want to take Overwatch that little more seriously and test their skill, competitive mode is the place to be.
