Well, it looks like Nintendo’s Amiibo are a hit. Shocking, I know.
There are no hard and fast numbers here, so don’t look for specifics, but website The Verge is reporting on a pretty interesting set of sales figures. The site says that Nintendo has sold “nearly” twice as many Amiibo figures as they’ve sold copies of Super Smash Bros for Wii U.
And since we know that SSB for Wii U has shifted somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.3 million copies in the US (global numbers are unknown), we also kind of know that Nintendo has sold at least 2.6 million Amiibo figures.
It’s unknown why Nintendo has been gun-shy on releasing sales figures on the toys-to-life line, a fact that’s especially true is they’ve indeed been as successful as The Verge has inferred. I imagine that if this is all true, or close to it, then we should be hearing something about it sooner than later in an official capacity.
Needless to say though, if these numbers are close to factual, then we’re probably in for a lot more of the little plastic characters.
