Amazon.com, in their endless quest to offer everything, launched their own smartphone three months ago to some fanfare. Now though, it looks like the mobile might be burning out.
According to the Guardian, an independent ad network is reporting that the phone holds a US market share of only about .2%. According to another firm, that pegs the amount of owners for the new phone at around 26,000 to 33,000. Considering what the market is for Android and Apple devices, which make up the bulk of a US market that includes about 173 million users, that’s an absolute pittance.
It’s odd to see this kind of a stumble from Amazon honestly. The company usually fires on all cylinders and rarely makes a misstep, though challenging the Android and Apple platforms could definitely be construed as one. Although it is still a little early to call the Fire Phone a flop per say, seeing this kind of sales dearth is alarming. If Amazon can’t figure out a way to turn sales around, and fast, this fire might be put out a little sooner than the company would have liked.
