This War of Mine brings a new face to military conquest

11 bit Studios’ newest game shows the human side of conflict, turning what might have been an action title into a fight for survival in a war-torn city.

“This can happen in your city, in your country,” Michal Drozdowski, lead designer, said. “While designing a new game, we came across an article that described how one man survived in a besieged city. We learned about his hardships and the horror of that experience. We decided to work around this idea and make something real, something that moves people and make them think for a second. It’s about time that games, just like any other art form, start talking about important things.”

You want something original in game design? Here’s your game. There’ve been plenty of survival-type titles of one kind or another over the years, tub I think this might be the first to actually show what life might be like in a war zone for those that aren’t wearing body armor and sporting assault rifles.

Drozdowski’s comment about this happening in any city is a chilling one too. It’s pretty rare that we as a society think about something like that, but it’s definitely a sobering thought. And one that hits close to home for a good deal of the globe.

11 bit promises that players will have to make hard choices in This War of Mine, including whether to sacrifice some of the group that you’ll be in ‘control’ of for the greater good of all. Quite frankly, it sounds like the mature shot in the arm that the ‘military shooter’ genre could use. Titles like this one are how gaming grows up.

Expect to see lots more in the next few months on This War of Mine, the game will be hitting some time down the road for the PC and mobile devices.
