Konami‘s classic run and gun title, Contra III: Alien Wars, is now available for the Wii U virtual console in North America and Japan.
Contra 3 was released on the Super Nintendo in 1992, and ported to the Game Boy Advance in 2003, as well as the Wii‘s virtual console in 2007. This notorious shooter is considered by many to be the hardest entry in the series. Even on its easiest setting with the Konami code activated, this game has a way of besting even the most skilled players. It was a raw display of the SNES‘s power, making good use of mode 7 in two of its stages; not to mention the beautifully crafted sprites and levels. Even today, you find yourself admiring all the little details in the game.
It was arguably the most inventive game in the series as well, with outrageous designs for stages; such as riding on missiles shot out of a helicopter, which are hitting the boss you’re fighting, the top down perspectives in mode 7, and riding a futuristic motorcycle while shooting down enemies. Its challenging and fun design has yet to be bested, even by its successors Contra 4 and Contra Hard Corps: Uprising.
