Nickelodeon acquires Garfield and US Acres

Viacom has officially purchased Paws Inc. That means that Garfield and US Acres are coming back to TV, though fans of the comic strip needn’t worry.

Garfield and Friends

There were very few comic strips that held the kind of clout that Garfield did back in the 80s and early 90s. The fat cat commanded a small empire of daily comics, collected books, toys, a cartoon show and just about everything else. He even had a Sega Genesis video game.

Since then, Jim Davis’ creation has waned significantly. But even without anything supplementing it, the newspaper strip rolls on. Though now it’s probably about to get a whole lot bigger… again.

Entertainment giant Viacom has swallowed up Paws Inc, the company that controls the rights to Garfield and his barnyard pals in US Acres. With the deal nearing completion, children’s TV channel and Viacom owned Nickelodeon is ready to talk about the feline.

According to The Toy Book, Nick will be creating a new animated series starring Garfield. But much like in decades past, they have bigger plans for him than just that, with plenty of merchandise that’ll be heading to stores.

As to when all of this is expected to appear, well that’s a little more of a mystery. The company hasn’t announced dates for anything just yet. If you are a fan though, hang in there. There’s plenty of Garfield on the horizon, and Davis’ daily strip will continue into the foreseeable future.
