Fulcrum Publishing to release graphic novel about the endangered creatures of the sea

Meet the most endangered residents of the world’s oceans in this new graphic novel collection, Wild Ocean.

Fulcrum Publishing calls the oceans of the Earth “the last wild frontier on Earth”, and I think they’re pretty much on target with that. After all, we actually know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the totality of the submerged portions of the planet that we live on. That’s kind of crazy when you think about it, but it’s true.

Maybe one of the reasons that the oceans get as abused as they do by humanity on the whole is because we really understand so little about it and the animals that live there. Hopefully, this new collected book from Fulcrum and editor Matt Dembicki will help to change that just a bit. The book brings together stories of 12 of the most endangered animals of the deep including: hawksbill turtle, bluefin tuna, hammerhead shark, giant clam, manatee, blue whale, coral, albatross, whale shark, monk seal, manta ray, and the seahorse.

Each story is designed to entertain, but also teach a little something about the animals and their struggles in their current habitats. As someone who has always been fascinated by the world’s oceans, I probably would have eaten this up as a kid. Looks like very cool stuff too as Wild Ocean was produced in conjunction with non-profit organization PangeaSeed, with an eye towards scientific accuracy and teaching.

The publisher hope the book will “educate and foster a passion for conservation and a sense of connection with the world beneath the waves”, and it seems like it just might. You can expect to see Wild Ocean: Sharks, Whales, Rays, and Other Endangered Sea Creatures by Mike Dembicki on store shelves starting May 13th from Fulcrum Publishing.
