Capcom’s enhanced version of Onimusha 2 debuts for modern consoles and the PC

A classic from the PS2 era returns for modern platforms, with last week’s release of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny.

The power of the Oni

Popular in its own right, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny delivered a second adventure in Capcom’s feudal Japanese action/horror series when it first debuted in 2002. For the followup, the publisher eschewed the original title’s hero Samanosuke for Jubei Yagyu. Of course, that wasn’t the only alteration, as a completely new set of characters and a new storyline accompanied it, albeit one that still featured the vile Nobunaga.

Now that the series is seeing a rebirth, Capcom has brought that second outing back around for a new generation of fans. But of course, this isn’t the same game that longtime fans played back at the turn of the millennium. Pulling the original’s swordplay and RPG elements, into the current age is a revitalized look and much more.

Not only does Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny feature enhanced graphics, but Capcom has also added gameplay upgrades like “newly refined controls, seamless weapon switching, auto-save”, and skippable cutscenes. Those boosts come in addition to two new difficulty modes with Easy and “Hell”, plus the unlocking of the title’s mini-games right from the start.

The best-selling entry in the Onimusha™ series, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny follows the gripping journey of Jubei Yagyu, a master swordsman whose home village was decimated by Nobunaga Oda and his formidable army of demons. Gifted with Oni powers after a mysterious encounter, Jubei sets out on a path of vengeance, vowing to punish and defeat the evil Nobunaga.

Capcom press release

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is out now for the PC (via Steam), Xbox One, PS4, and Switch. Along with dropping singly, fans who haven’t yet grabbed a copy of the original game’s remaster can get in on a double-pack. The Onimusha 1 + 2 Pack bundle is out now as well, and for the same platforms as you see above.

As a cool little bonus too, players who have “save data” from Onimusha will get a bonus when they fire up Onimusha 2, in the form of a special outfit inspired by original hero Samanosuke Akechi.
