SDCC ’24: Nacelle Company surprises fans with the return of The Toys That Made Us

A modern icon and a heck of a lot of fun, The Toys That Made Us is coming back to explore more classic toys of yesteryear.

They actually did kind of make us

While we’re well aware that there are plenty of awesome toys and collectibles out there in the modern year, the stuff that emerged in decades gone by still comprises a good chunk of it. G.I. Joe, Transformers, Barbie, LEGO, Masters of the Universe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more all combined to create a pop-culturesphere that’s still alive and kicking. It’s part of why Netflix’ The Toys That Made Us was so incredible.

A documentary series, The Toys That Made Us delved into the sometimes surprising origins of these brands and others. It revealed the histories of both the brands, and the men and women that worked behind the scenes to get those toys onto shelves and into kids’ imaginations. It might still be the thing that the company called Nacelle is best known for, thought it’s certainly spread out since.

Nacelle also created The Movies That Made Us (on Netflix as well), plus Disney’s Behind the Attraction, and the ever-evolving NacelleVerse. The latter, if you don’t often read BG, brings together a huge collection of classic 80s and 90s animated series’ under one roof to forge a shared universe of sci-fi action. We’ve already seen comics and action figures emerge on that end, and will see full-on animation soon.

But even so, Nacelle hasn’t forgotten about The Toys That Made Us, which as you can see above, is coming back. Just revealed at Comic Con, The Toys That Made Us will be hitting Netflix once again, picking up from where it left off in 2019 and exploring an all new set of properties. And we’re not talking about one more season either, as fans can look for it to be around for “at least two additional seasons”.

Those new seasons are in the works right now, being directed by Brian Volk-Weiss.

“By far the most consistent comments we’ve received over the last 5 years have been some sort of inquiry about the future of The Toys That Made Us,” said Nacelle Founder and CEO, Brian Volk-Weiss. “We’re honored to be able to bring this series back to the fans that have waited so long to see it return, and we appreciate the support over the last 5 years that helped make this a reality.”

As for what toy lines the new seasons will be digging into, that hasn’t been announced yet. But you won’t have to wait too long to find out, as those very names will be revealed tomorrow, Saturday July 27th, at Nacelle’s San Diego Comic Con International panel.

If you’re going to the show, you’ll be able to find that in room 6A (at the convention center itself), kicking off at 11:15am and running until 12:15pm pacific. Not to worry if you’re not going though, as we expect to have the full scoop here for you, so make sure to check back.
