Marvel’s new Black Panther series casts the hero into the shadows

There’s a pretty big narrative shakeup heading for Black Panther, as the newest run will see the title hero become an outcast in his own country.

King no more

When you think of Marvel Comics’ Black Panther, there are a few things that immediately jump to mind. One of those is that he’s the freaking king of his homeland, Wakanda. But the upcoming series looks like it’s about to change that little fact.

Launching this summer from Eve L. Ewing and artist Chris Allen, Black Panther #1 will turn the king into a rogue. T’Challa will be out as sovereign, and it sounds like he’ll be on the run as well, from Wakandan forces. But as you might’ve gathered, that doesn’t mean that he’ll be leaving the country he calls home.

Banished from the throne and a fugitive in his own homelands, T’Challa still can’t leave Wakanda without its sworn protector. A king without a crown, he finds new purpose lurking the streets and shadows of the Wakandan city that bears his father’s name, BIRNIN T’CHAKA. New direction, new villains, new creative team – get in on the ground floor of Marvel’s next smash hit! Get a first look at the revamped design for T’Challa now.

Marvel Comics press release

All in all, 2023’s new Black Panther run seems like a legitimate new direction for the character, and one that could inject some new life into the hero. Look for it to debut this June.
