Yeah, this one’s a bit of an oddball story. Seems as though the Nvidia Shield will be getting Nintendo Wii and GameCube titles, but only in China.
Nintendo goes to Nvidia
Okay so, there’s a GameCube and Wii virtual console. Sort of. For the Nvidia Shield. In China. This is such a weird story, but a pretty cool one too, if you happen to be an Nvidia Shield-owning Nintendo fan in China. That’s because very soon, there will be officially released Nintendo GameCube and Wii games available for the platform.
Seems like something that’d be more than a little fishy, no? But it’s all on the up and up and quite official. Industry site MCV is reporting that the deal came about due to Nintendo’s relations with not only Nvidia, but also iQiyi, a Chinese company. This is also only in China, and appears as though it’ll stay that way. So don’t get too excited about seeing PC support for these games anywhere else.
As to what games we’re taking about here, they are:
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
- Super Mario Galaxy
- New Super Mario Bros Wii
- Punch-Out
- Metroid Prime
It’s unclear what kind of a timetable we’re looking at for the rollout of these, or if there’ll be more in the future. Though, I imagine that if these sell well, there’ll be additional titles announced… in China. Interesting to note though is that MCV also points out that Nintendo has seemingly had an emulation issue to work through. Might these titles getting ports mean that the long-awaited Switch Virtual Console might be arriving at last? Cross your fingers, as there’s still no official word.
