The zombie apocalypse isn’t done just yet, as Techland has revealed the next chapter in its action saga, with Dying Light: The Beast.
Who the Beast is, is up to you
We’re not too far off from the last entry in the zombie series that is Dying Light, but there’s another sequel on the way. Or maybe it’s a prequel? Either way, developer Techland has taken the wraps off of Dying Light: The Beast. The upcoming title focuses on original original hero Kyle Crane, and his twisted history with The Baron, Marius Fischer.
A brilliant scientist and the last surviving member of a wealthy pre-apocalypse pharma-family, The Baron is a man who Crane has a deep history with. Fischer experimented on Dying Light’s hero for 13 years, turning him into a living weapon who’s capable of becoming… a beast.
Players of the new standalone title will have to harness Crane’s savage rage to protect the citizens of Castor Woods. From the sounds of it, they might have to protect those fine folk from him too, if they can’t manage the monster within.
Castor Woods is looking pretty phenomenal in that trailer. Techland says that the locale features “a high-fidelity, intricately crafted open world filled with diverse areas”, and “small, detailed touches in the new interiors and dynamic weather changes that make you feel as though you’re right there, a part of the immersive environment like the Swamps — a new area shown in the trailer”.
As you can also see in the video, the actual woods of Castor Woods will present quite a problem for Crane. If he stays out in them for too long, the day/night cycle will catch up with him, meaning that he could be swarmed by foes emerging from the darkness. Techland adds that the title will feature realistic physics, and that players will be able to engage “the best parkour elements” for traversing the game’s varied locales.
Then there are the enemies. While it looks like Dying Light‘s usual assortment of rotten shamblers and Virals will be included, there will be a new breed as well, plus another fresh location. That would be The Baron‘s lab, a place that seems sure to bring out a little extra rage in Crane.
Zombie fans stay tuned, because Dying Light: The Beast is coming up next year, scheduled to hit the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox in the summer of 2025.
