Turok: Origins brings the classic action series back in a new form

One of the all-time great console FPS’ is coming back in third-person shooter form with Saber Interactive‘s Turok: Origins.

I. Am. Turok!

Far and away, one of the very best console first-person shooters of the 90s was Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Based on a comic book, the game starred the Son of Stone, a Native American hero who defended the dinosaur-infested Lost Lands from all threats, including the alien. The original title crafted a series that we think it’s fair to say most fans assumed would be around for a long time, but as fate would have it, that wasn’t the case.

After the N64 era, Turok had a few stabs at new adventures, but none really took. The property fell into complete obscurity after a reboot, simply named Turok, saw release in 2008. That game revamped the mythos from the ground up, retaining some core themes, but otherwise crafting an original sci-fi take.

So with all of that in mind, it’d be easy to see why fans might be itching for something new. That’s just what Saber Interactive, via a collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences, is aiming to deliver. Say hello to the just-revealed Turok: Origins.

This new game isn’t a prequel to the originals, but is instead is another totally new take on the mythos. Turok: Origins will focus on both solo and co-op action, as players take on the role of ‘a’ Turok warrior. As you’ll see in the announcement trailer, the title looks pretty sharp, delivering plenty of action, dinosaur-like creatures, and a new mechanic that will have players using foes’ own DNA against them.

Just don’t be too shocked when you hit ‘play’, as Turok: Origins isn’t an FPS. Instead, the property is making a side-step into the realm of the third-person shooter.

Turok: Origins revives the legendary game franchise’s action and spirit while bringing it forward into the modern era with a completely new look, story, and gameplay. Players will take on the role of fierce Turok warriors to face off against ferocious dinosaurs and a terrifying alien threat that seeks to destroy all human life in the galaxy. Fans can unleash devastating attacks on enemies with weapons and abilities, and harness fallen enemies’ DNA to upgrade their arsenal. Players will embark on a high-stakes adventure — solo or with friends — to unravel mysteries that hold the key to saving humanity.

Saber Interactive press release

Saber promises a twisting and turning narrative in Turok: Origins, as players travel across what looks to be a new version of the “Lost Lands”. Instead of one place, Turok: Origins‘ Lost Lands will be a series of planets that will harbor everything from ancient temples and jungles, to wasteland canyons. Plasma rifles, ray guns, snipers, bows, shotguns, and more will be one hand too, as Turoks make their way.

There’s also that DNA mechanic, which sounds like it might be a slick new gimmick. Via that, players will be able to extract DNA from both their enemies and the environment itself. That material can then be integrated into battle-suits, giving characters new powers and “upgradeable skills and abilities to give you an edge in combat”, according to the press release.

It’s different, that’s for sure, but we’re going to remain cautiously optimistic. It’s Turok after all, and that’s a name that we can’t help but be excited about. If you are too, then stay tuned for plenty more in the months to come. Turok: Origins doesn’t have a release date just yet, but you can expect to see it arrive for the PC (via Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
