Since its announcement, we’ve seen little about Nintendo‘s Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, but that’s just changed.
Here we go
We got a little more info about Donkey Kong Country Returns HD today, along with a much-needed trailer showing more of the game’s improved visuals. Things are looking pretty darn good too, as the title is prettier than ever, as it follows Donkey and Diddy Kong‘s mission to reclaim the banana hoard from King K. Rool.
Fans who’ve only played the SNES original will of course find plenty of new content, but there’s fresh stuff included for almost everyone. The new game will reportedly incorporate “selected features” from both the Wii and 3DS editions, that’ll shake out to include 80 levels (including the 3DS exclusives), and nine worlds of action.
Stomp enemies, blast out of barrels, ride mine carts and do so much more when Donkey Kong Country Returns HD launches early next year. This visually-enhanced version of the duo’s platforming adventure combines selected features from both Wii and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game – including the extra Nintendo 3DS levels!
With 80 levels across 9 different worlds – each featuring a dastardly boss battle at the end – the Kongs will have to be at their best to earn back their precious bananas. And of course, gathering every secret, collectible and Time Attack medal will require some serious platforming panache.
But you don’t have to do it alone! A friend or family member can lend a hand as Diddy Kong in local co-op. Diddy can use his jet pack to help land tough jumps and fend off enemies with his trusty peanut popgun. Playing in Modern Mode helps players out with additional hearts and items, and you can also select Original Mode for a tougher challenge.

Couch co-op? Oh yes indeed. It’s a shame that the game won’t launch for Christmas morning fun, but it will be along sooner than later. Fans can expect to see Donkey Kong Country Returns HD land on the Switch next month, on January 16th, 2025.
