The Boshin War meets steampunk in Owlcat Games‘ and Another Angle Games‘ upcoming alternate history cRPG, Shadow of the Road.
Shadow and steel
Role-playing fans should know the name Owlcat Games well. The company has had a history of making some pretty sharp titles, though this time Owlcat is publishing a title for developer Another Angle Games, dubbed Shadow of the Road.
The upcoming title will send players on a quest through 19th century Japan, as the real-world Boshin War heads to its close. While the bloody conflict was a real-world happening, the game takes some fantastic liberties with its elements, adding in steampunk themes and superpowers for a battle that pits Shogun against Emperor.
Players will be able to assemble their own team to complete their mission, and there’ll be a heavy choice-based mechanic according to Owlcat. Genre fans can look for that to allow players to “form new bonds, sever lifelong friendships, or mend family ties”.
In Shadow of the Road, explore the rich tapestry of an alternate timeline 19th-century Japan as the Boshin War approaches a bitter and bloody end. Players will immerse themselves in a world that combines tradition and modernity, Japanese mythology, and steampunk technology. Enter the struggle between the Shogun and the Emperor, and delve into captivating narratives, leading a diverse group of adventurers through a dynamic, enchanting realm where their decisions shape destiny.
