The classic and most iconic version of Tomb Raider‘s Lara Croft is back, thanks to Dark Horse and a Colossal volume 1.
Raidin’ since ’99
Yes, we know that the first Tomb Raider video game debuted in 1996, but we’re not talking about games here, we’re talking comics. And although it was 1997 when the character starred in a crossover with superhero Witchblade, it was in 1999 that her own landmark series began.
The Tomb Raider series spun out of comics imprint Top Cow, and featured a murderer’s row of talent that included Dan Jurgens, Adam Hughes, Michael Turner, Andy Park, Marc Silvestri, David Finch and others. Those creatives were only fitting though, as the book served up an all-star debut for one of the greatest video game heroines of the day, and ran for an impressive 50 issues before coming to a close.
Since then, Tomb Raider has seen several rebirths in the video game realm, but we can’t say that a comic version has stepped in to do the same. So what’s a fan to do? Well, if you remember the book fondly or are a new fan who’d like to get into it, Dark Horse Comics has an option for you.
Just revealed by the publisher, Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Vol.1 is on tap for this coming summer, and it’s absolutely stacked.
Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of history, years of experience, and dual pistols, Lara Croft will go to the ends of the earth to preserve the world’s most precious treasures from a shadowy organization intent on her destruction. Luckily Lara won’t have to go it alone as she’s joined by roguish playboy Chase Carver and her buttoned-up assistant Madeline Hovan! Join Lara and her friends as they face down unfathomable foes, betrayal, and ancient secrets.
Dark Horse press release
A hardcover book, Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Vol.1 will include a massive 888 pages of action. That shakes out be the first 34 issues of the comic… sans issue #25. We assume the exclusion of that single issue has to do with licensing, since Tomb Raider #25 features a second crossover with Witchblade. Still, that’s a ton of Tomb Raiding for one book.
Fans can expect to see it arrive in book stores on June 24th, 2025, and land in comics shops the very next day (June 25th). Pre-orders are open right now, and you can snag one via TFAW, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and local bookstores.
