Sonic x Shadow Generations a hit, speeds to sales over 1 million units

Not a huge surprise, especially since the game it’s re-presenting was a smash, but Sonic x Shadow Generations is a hit.

Going dark

Released just last week, Sega’s remastering (and then some) of Sonic Generations is officially a hit. The game, now called Sonic x Shadow Generations brings the 2011 original back to fans with some huge improvements. Not only did the title get a visual bump, but it’s also now host to a whole new campaign, focusing on the darkest of ‘Hogs.

That of course, is Shadow, the franchise’s anti-heroic hedgehog who’s had an apparently tragic past. That history played into the lead-in animated shorts that Sega produced, setting up Sonic x Shadow Generations’ action. And apparently that “action” is a pretty big hit with fans.

The reinvigorated game has surged in its first few days of sale, surpassing one million units sold.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a title that combines two games: Sonic Generations™, where players can enjoy speed-running various stages with Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, enhanced with new elements, and “Shadow Generations,” a completely new game featuring the dark hero Shadow racing through dynamic environments. The story begins as a mysterious creature called the “Time Eater” creates distortions in time and space, setting off separate adventures for Sonic and Shadow. Players can look forward to a high-speed action-adventure with distinct gameplay experiences and narratives.

In addition to offering a new “Sonic” gameplay experience, this title supports 12 languages *2 to reach a wider global audience and was released simultaneously worldwide on multiple platforms. It was also involved in large-scale global promotions, including exhibiting at events around the world.

Sega press release

Sonic x Shadow Generations’ release is the latest part in what Sega calls the “Fearless: Year of Shadow”. That’s a global initiative from the publisher, that includes not just this launch, but also this winter’s release of Sonic Rumble on mobiles, and the major morion picture, Sonic the Hedgehog 3. If you somehow didn’t know, Shadow figures into that movie in a big way, serving as the apparent villain and voiced by one Keanu Reeves.

You can catch the movie on December 20th, while Sonic x Shadow Generations is out now for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the Switch, and the PC.
