Marvel Comics’ full Star Wars plans revealed, with three limited series’ filling the next trilogy gap

Star Wars fans awaiting word of Marvel’s next comic book plans finally have it, as three new series’ have been announced.

From Jakku with love

As fans of the property know by now, Marvel has wrapped up its Star Wars comic book series’ that took place between classic films, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. But with that collection of tales finished, where would the publisher head next? Well, post Jedi of course, with new stories that will lead-into the sequel trilogies. Hang on though, don’t tune out yet.

We know the sequels are divisive at best, but even if you’re in the group that doesn’t care for them, you might still be into what’s set to emerge from Marvel. That’s because it seems like the three new limited series’ will tell the earlier stories of the New Republic, and not really get all that much into the movies’ time period.

The action will begin with the four issue Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku, from author Alex Segura and a team of artists that includes Leonard Kirk, Stefano Raffaele, Jethro Morales, and Luke Ross.

Starring core characters like Luke and Leia as well as new heroes and villains who were instrumental during this thrilling period, the three Battle of Jakku series will bridge the gap between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy like never before, revealing key insights behind the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and the Empire’s demise, including the Emperor’s secret contingency plans; and introduce the shocking power-hungry threats that emerged during this time of uncertainty!

“It’s an unbelievable honor to be able to tell this lost story of Star Wars history, alongside so many amazing artists, in the pages of the three BATTLE OF JAKKU limited series,” Segura said. “Our story will be epic in scope – involving all the major characters you love, plus some new, exciting additions to the mythos. We’ll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War – we’ll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing. The goal for all of us is to turn up the volume and make sure this adventure stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the other stories of the era. As the Empire collapses, a new darkness arises!”

Marvel Comics press release

As you can see, things will expand from this first title. Though again, it’s worth noting that unlike what’s come before, the new volley of books will include all limited series’. Once they’re done, we can’t imagine Marvel abandoning the Star Wars universe, though where the IP might head at that point is anyone’s guess.
