Bombshell is back. Well, she’s almost back anyway, as the sequel to Ion Fury is now scheduled to land on the PC next month.
Cross-country
It doesn’t quite seem that long ago to us, but Ion Fury first launched back in 2018. A retro-styled hit at the time, Ion Fury introduced the world to Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, and her cyberpunky, future world. It also introduced the world to a pretty sharp-playing first-person shooter that was forged in the tradition of Duke Nukem 3D.
And while a sequel was subsequently announced, it ended up spending a good long time in development. If you’ve been waiting for it, then you’ll be happy to know that your wait is coming to an end in rapid fashion, as Phantom Fury is looking at an April 2024 launch.
The followup will once again feature Bombshell, and looks like it’ll be fast-forwarding the aesthetics from Duke to Quake/Half-Life, with a later-90s coat of pain. The game picks up 5 years after the close of Ion Fury, and will offer a change of scenery for players, with a road-trip theme. That’ll take the now-cybernetic hero (she had her arm replaced) across the US on the hunt for something called the Demon Core.
Expect explosions, loads of gunplay, several vehicles to make use of, and more explosions.
Set off on a cross-country trip filled with over-the-top action sequences inspired by classic road movies. Survive shootouts at a seedy motel in Albuquerque, cause chaos in Chicago, and launch an assault on a Los Alamos research facility with Shelly’s exhaustive arsenal of over 20 weapons.
Tackle enemy encounters creatively – and explosively – across each highly interactive environment. Charge in with reckless abandon, wielding the Motherflakker– an armor-piercing shotgun–or take a more calculated approach by monitoring in-game computers and tossing Bowling Bombs toward groups of unsuspecting foes. Each of the over 20 weapons features unlockable upgrades and mods, allowing for a wide array of options no matter the odds Shelly faces.
Utilize Shelly’s bionic arm and enhance her combat capabilities with a suite of enhancements like shock-inducing punches and bullet-blocking shields as she fights against dangerous cyborgs, souped-up soldiers, and freakish mutations. Square off against larger-than-life boss battles and soar through the skies during pilotable helicopter sequences with plenty of explosions to go around.
3D Realms press release
Phantom Fury is set to hit the PC on April 23rd, 2024, with console editions coming up as well, some time later in the year. And if you’re going to be at PAX East between March 21st and 24th, make sure you stop by Booth #18019. There you’ll be able to play the play the Crater Bar level of the final release.
