Captain Pike and crew to star in new IDW Star Trek comic

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is about to be the latest Trek series to boldly go into the world of the printed page, with a new comic from IDW.

Hit it

Star Trek is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to the new generation of shows airing on Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+. Fan response has been fairly mixed to all of it, as a good chunk seems to eschew franchise canon in favor of modern sensibilities. When you’re talking Trek specifically, that’s a pretty big no-no.

Nevertheless, Paramount keep on trucking, with plenty of new series’ and seasons of existing shows. But while most of it has been hit or miss with the base, it does feel like there’s a possible exception with Strange New Worlds.

The show brought back the re-cast original crew of the Enterprise, from its appearance on Discovery, including Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike. With that, it started fleshing out an already existing Trek era and set of characters. As mentioned, it definitely looks to be the best received Paramount+ Star Trek yet, and so an expansion was probably a foregone conclusion. Enter IDW.

The publisher already has a Star Trek line rolling, and will be bringing the cast of Strange New Worlds to life as well. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds–The Illyrian Enigma will be the first series to spotlight the show, and carry with a four-issue arc.

Co-executive producer for the show itself, Kirsten Beyer has been joined by writer Mike Johnson to craft the plot, with artist Megan Levens and colorist Charlie Kirchoff on board as well. In addition to the main cover, you can also expect to see three variants, which you can check out below.

Here’s a taste of the plot:

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds–The Ilyrian Enigma, Commander Una Chin-Riley—first officer and helmsman of the U.S.S. Enterprise— stands accused of unlawful genetic modification by Starfleet. Sparing no time, Captain Pike and his crew set out in search of evidence to prove her innocence!
