Tarzan swinging onto VR platforms

Classic hero Tarzan is making a return to the world of video games in a new virtual reality adventure. Tarzan VR swings into retail this year.

*Tarzan yell*

I think it’s probably fair to say that Tarzan is one of literature’s more enduring heroes. The character has been around for over 100 years after all, and he still pops up from time to time… like now.

Tarzan VR is the first virtual reality game based on the jungle-bound hero. Actually, you can probably take out the “VR” tag there. I’m pretty sure this is the first non-Disney video game period based on him. For fans who’ve been waiting, it’s actually looking pretty cool.

A cel-shaded title, Tarzan VR is a first-person game (natch’) that will be delivered in episodic format. Check out the first virtual swings across the jungle in the trailer below.

There just isn’t much there in terms of gameplay. Though from what we can see, Stonepunk Studios’ title is looking like a well-detailed adventure. It remains to be seen just how it’ll play however, since Tarzan is a highly mobile hero.

“Who hasn’t wanted to swing like Tarzan at some point in their life?” said Douglas Nabors, Fun Train CEO. “Stonepunk Studios is crafting an imaginative world that demonstrates a faithful but unique vision for the Tarzan franchise.  We can’t wait for people to experience it.”

“We are especially pleased to partner with Fun Train and Stonepunk Studios to develop our first TARZAN virtual reality game” said Jim Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.  “Using this new technology, we believe we have entrusted the best team to develop an exciting game that reimagines Tarzan for a whole new generation.”

Tarzan VR press release

Tarzan VR is expected to see release some time this year. Watch for it on the “PlayStationVR, Valve Index, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift S”.
