You read it right – Wonder Woman is teaming up with Conan the Barbarian. DC and Dark Horse are hoping for the collision of legends will make for a crossover for the ages.
Themyscira meets Hyboria
It’s no secret that Wonder Woman is the hero of the moment. With a major motion picture that continues to tear up the box office at present, she’s easily one the biggest superheroes out there. And Conan? Well he’s a pretty special comic hero as well. He’s thrived for decades and rung up a few movies for good measure. Add ’em both together and you get the makings of a crossover event that could be pretty special.
Our tale begins as Conan the Barbarian arrives on the shores of an unknown land, and soon meets the world’s most fearsome arena fighter—Wonder Woman. Ill-fated circumstances force them both into slavery. As they attempt to free themselves from the grips of the rich and powerful slave-owner Dellos, a dark magic descends upon their land, a presence that wants to destroy them both. But who has the might to stop the most talented gladiators who have ever existed?
Those are the basics. But there are a few things that stand out that we still don’t know. First and foremost is how the hell Diana is in the Hyborian age to begin with. Obviously, this is a tale that’s not exactly set in the DC Universe. Still, Wonder Woman is a modern hero, and operates in current time.
Conan is decidedly not that in the least. His Hyboria is a world that is set before recorded time. So there’s a pretty big mystery right there. Also worth a mention, is that Wondy has strength that almost rivals Superman. And that’s just the beginning. She’s got a host of other super-powers as well, so how’s she a slave? Must have something to do with that “dark magic”…
Big heroes, big talent
Anyway, plot-points aside, this book is set to have some major league talent behind it as well. Modern legend Gail Simone will be handling the script, while Wonder Woman artist Aaron Lopresti will be providing the art.
“I love crossovers, I love Wonder Woman, and being able to bring the undisputed greatest warriors of the DCU and Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age together for the very first time is a dream come true,” says Simone. “A major draw is getting to reunite with the great Aaron Lopresti, whose very favorite things to draw are Wonder Woman and barbarians. Its blades and bracelets, wizards and wonder and I couldn’t be more delighted.”
“Uniting the greatest characters of the DC Universe with some of the most famous and notable characters in pop culture is at the core of the most memorable crossovers we’ve ever done,” said DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras. “Gail and Aaron’s series will surely create a new legend for fans and readers to talk about for years to come.”
Watch for issue #1 of Wonder Woman/Conan to arrive on the racks on September the 20th. It’s the first of a scheduled six issues, so strap in, it certainly looks like it’s going to be a fun ride.
