Sony cuts 1st party support for the PS Vita

In a pretty big announcement, Sony has made it official that there’s nothing in the pipeline for their current handheld console.

While this doesn’t signal the ‘death’ of the Vita really, it isn’t all that great to hear. As of now though, Sony has zero first party games in development for the portable console that currently carries the brand name, and has no plans in the future.

The company has announced that all development resources are being shifted to the PS4, which still selling like gangbusters and is the current market leader by a fair shake in the home gaming section of gamingdom. So, with that in mind, what’ll be driving the Vita? As they also detailed, that’ll be third party games.

I actually didn’t know this, but apparently the Vita’s target demographic was teens and kids, and Sony says that’s what hindered the console’s growth. Personally, I think the target was pretty clearly adults given he price point and games that launched with it, but hey that’s just my opinion.

They also go on to say though, that the age bracket that they’re after has warmed up to the console as a result of Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition. From that statement, I don’t know what the future looks like for the Vita, but it could be decidedly ‘kid’ skewed.

That’d certainly come as a disappointment for me, and I have to imagine a bunch of other Vita owners, who were still holding out hope that the dual-stick handheld would become a solid place to play some FPS’ on the go.

In any event, nothing is final yet I suppose, since we have no clue what Sony is talking about when the company mentions the games that are on the way from third parties. The only thing that’s certain is that there won’t be any more first party games debuting on it.

So, stay tuned I guess.
