What does it mean to be human? Are we still who we are, if we don’t look like a person? These are questions that lead into the fact that the new horror game SOMA just got a whole lot creepier.
Themes like the ones here have been explored in games to some extent before, but never to the disturbing degree that they are in SOMA. There’s an almost surreal air around the fact that the poor guy who’s (I guess) been dumped into that robot body, doesn’t seem to think he’s any different than he was when he was assumedly killed piloting the plane/ship that he mentions.
It’s creepily ‘normal’ how he’s talking too, which just adds to it all. And then there’s that glimpse of the player-character’s hands too; a look at something happening there that might make him not-quite human either, and maybe more than the other machine/human hybrids inhabiting the world of SOMA.
This is one to watch very closely if you’re a horror fan, it could just be a sleeper hit. The game arrives tomorrow (September 22nd) for the PC and PS4 from Frictional Games.
