Sonic Boom returning to the Nintendo 3DS with Fire & Ice

Looks like Sega hasn’t given up on the Sonic Boom spinoff series just yet.

Well, it looks pretty good no? I mean, one of the main complaints about the first Sonic Boom was that it lacked the feeling of speed that 2D Sonic titles had kind of become known for. It is, like, his whole thing after all. Fire & Ice though, looks like it has some blast processing happening, which is a very good thing for fans.

The game, which was developed by Sanzaru Games Inc., casts players in the roles of 5 notable Sonic characters (with the exception of maybe Sticks) as they take on perennial foe Dr. Eggman and the brand new villain, D-Fekt. And gamers will have some new abilities to take on this gruesome twosome too, with the ability to wield both heat and cold (hence the name).

“We really want this game to surprise and delight Sonic fans both new and old, and have created a unique, fun game that delivers,” said John Cheng, President and COO, SEGA of America. “By introducing unique elemental gameplay features like ice and fire, along with new speed and exploration gameplay, there is a lot to enjoy with Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.”

Yes, it does sound pretty good… As a Sonic fan myself, I’ll reserve judgement. The last Sonic game I really enjoyed was Sonic Generations and, quite frankly, if they got the gameplay back to something like that then I couldn’t care less about the so-so character designs- I’ll play this into oblivion.

So will Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice light the fire in the hearts of Sonic fandom, or leave them cold? Find out when the game hits the Nintendo 3DS this Holiday Season.
