New SOMA trailer shows rusting horror in the cold dark of the deep

Who thought Frictional Games’ upcoming horror title SOMA was set in space or on an alien world? Well, you were wrong…

50,000 leagues under the sea was probably the last place I would have thought SOMA would have been set. From all the previous trailers and imagery, it certainly looked like something in the stars was the more likely stage for the game, but here we are with the release of the ‘Lambda’ trailer and we’re decidedly under the waves, in the deep dark.

It’s pretty neat that Frictional Games took a much less likely path traveled and didn’t go the easy way of making this sci-fi/horror title a space-based one. I can’t really think of too many games set underwater (BioShock is really the only one that comes to mind) and that just makes SOMA even more unique. Not that the brains loaded into machines wasn’t already pretty… different.

In any event, this one is still a ways off and is scheduled for release some time in 2015 for the PC and the PS4. Hopefully we’ll have a lot more on the storyline in the weeks to come since SOMA is looking like an incredibly interesting little horror romp from some developers who more than know what they’re doing in the genre.
