Nintendo demands fan-made Super Mario 64 level be pulled

Roystan Ross made the first level of Super Mario 64 in Unity as he was learning to use the software. Long story short, it turned out really great and he made it playable online. You know what happened next already don’t you?

First, take a look at Ross’ work:

Pretty nice huh?

So with the level built, Ross released his work to the masses and let people play said stage, free of charge of course, so not to infringe on anything. Not that that matters all that much apparently, because Nintendo petitioned the host to remove the demo, and you better believe that it was done with haste.

As of now, you can still play the short level via Ross’ blog, but as MCV points out, that’ll surely be next in the crosshairs of the Nintendo legal team. So if you’d like to get hands on with it, you’d best hustle.

Note to Nintendo- while I don’t agree with pulling this little fan-project, since it was pretty harmless, I have to say I’m more than a little interested in playing a Super Mario 64 HD remake. In fact, if anything, the demo helped foster that interest since I hadn’t really even thought about playing the game (in any form) in years. I don’t know how many others out there feel the same, but I’d snap a copy up in no time flat if it was to hit the eShop or the 3DS. Just sayin’.
