Tron: Ares heads to IMAX 3D for Early Access screening ahead of full release

The latest film in the famed sci-fi series is almost here, and Tron: Ares will be hitting the biggest screens in the world a little early.

Kind of meta

An Early Access release for a movie? Well, when you’re talking about a film series like Tron, that makes sense. After all, Disney’s iconic sci-fi property is all about an artificial world and AI beings. So using a video game term like ‘Early Access’ fits pretty darn well.

That’s just what fans will be getting too, as the Tron: Ares Early Access Screening is scheduled to arrive in IMAX 3D on October 8th. And as you can see, that’s ahead of the film’s theatrical (and IMAX) release date of October 10th.

The jump start will give Flynn fans a chance to see the film in advance of mass audiences, and on the biggest screens around. Not only that, but IMAX does seem to be the premium way to view the movie, since a good chunk of it was filmed with the format in mind.

Along with the Tron: Ares Early Access Screening, there’s also a special double feature for that very same day (Sept. 8th). Fans who want to max out the action will be able to grab tickets to back-to-back IMAX 3D showings of Tron: Legacy and Tron: Ares.

Those who attend both shows will even get a special bonus for their trouble too. That’ll be delivered in the form of a collectible Tron pin.

An epic for the format

As mentioned above, Tron: Ares was partially filmed for the IMAX format. And by “partially”, we mean almost an hour of its content. That’s thanks to director Joachim Rønning, who used specially certified cameras to capture 54 minutes of action.

Add to that the soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails, which’ll be delivered by IMAX’ audio tech, and you should have quite the experience.

Tron: Ares is the first installment in the franchise to be Filmed For IMAX. Director Joachim Rønning used IMAX-certified digital cameras to bring a striking new vision to life for the iconic digital world, with breathtaking depth, fidelity, and scale. The film features 54 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio, with Rønning crafting the film for The IMAX Experience®. Every scene draws audiences into a stunning world of digital wonder and high-octane real-world action.

With a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails – whose industrial rock soundscape is uniquely suited for the high-tech world of Tron, the film delivers an unparalleled sound experience. Paired with a custom sound mix tailored for IMAX’s acoustician-designed sound system, featuring the industry’s largest speakers, laser-aligned for pinpoint audio precision, audiences will feel every beat. Tron: Ares was enhanced frame by frame with IMAX’s proprietary Digital Media Remastering (DMR) technology, delivering unprecedented detail, clarity, and color.

IMAX press release

As mentioned IMAX 3D tickets for the Tron: Ares Early Access Screening are on sale now. Also ready to go are advanced tickets for that IMAX 3D double-feature that we mentioned. You can find them here.
