Hell is Us looks to deliver action and supernatural intrigue, in a world torn apart by civil war

There’s a lot going on in NACON and developer Rogue Factor’s Hell is Us, and it sounds like it won’t go easy on players.

War is still hell

Revealed at the State of Play event yesterday, Hell is Us is sounding mighty interesting. The game has a double layered story, centering on a country that’s embroiled in civil war. With that, survival for the amnesiac main character won’t be easy, as he embarks on a quest to find out more about his own past.

But as it so happens, there’s a lot more than a few guys with guns standing in his way. That’s because, in the midst of the bloody conflict, there’s also been a bizarre emergence. Supernatural creatures have begun to appear, ones that resemble ancient markers in the area.

Do they have a link to the war? Or is there something much darker going on?

Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure game where the protagonist sets out to learn more about his past in the different regions of a country ravaged by civil war. The almost total self-sufficiency of the country hides a dark secret: the recent appearance of supernatural creatures resembling ancient headstones and monuments in the region. Armed with weapons specially forged to fight these monsters, the protagonist must learn how to defeat them and use his equipment wisely.

NACON press release

What you can’t probably tell from that trailer, is how Hell is Us will play. Unlike most modern action/adventure titles, the game will feature a gameplay approach called player-plattering. The opposite of “silver-plattering”, player-plattering won’t serve everything up to the player on, you guessed it, a silver platter.

The aim is to make Hell is Us play a lot more like classic adventure titles, “encouraging exploration and reflection, and by eliminating traditional aids”, according to NACON. So basically, don’t expect “detailed maps, quest markers or compasses revealing all points of interest” in the game, as players will have to relay on their own “intuition, observational and reasoning skills” to make through.

There’s no release date just yet for Hell is Us, but you can expect to see it arrive some time in 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
