RoboCop might’ve been an underdog at retail, but it was an overwhelming winner for our November Game of the Month regardless.
Dead or alive you’re coming with me
We’re a little late with last month’s Game of the Month pick, but that’s the holidays for you. And anyway, there might be a good chance that you actually found one of our winners under the tree yesterday, becasue our ‘Gold’ level game has garnered no shortage of acclaim.
Now that’s not to say that it’s a blockbuster title, becasue it really isn’t, but RoboCop: Rogue City nonetheless seems to have hit the target. The game, which hails from NACON and developer Teyon, is a first-person shooter, but not one that you probably expect.
While the modern flavor of that genre is all about fast-action, Teyon wisely decided to stick to the source material. And that means that RoboCop: Rogue City is a slower-paced, though no less action-packed, affair. The title cyborg moves slowly and methodically, and absorbs enemy fire just like in the films.
While that might scare some off, if you’re a fan, there’s nothign that could sound better.
RoboCop: Rogue City
Release date: November 2nd, 2023
Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC
Publisher: NACON
Developer: Teyon
As you can probably tell there, that’s actor Peter Weller behind the steel once again, as he takes up the role of Alex Murphy one more time. As you can probably also tell, this is an adventure that very much fits in the with the original films.
Previously notable for Terminator: Resistance, Polish developer Teyon really kicked things up a notch for RoboCop: Rogue City, crating a story that takes place after RoboCop 2. Yes, that means the city is stiull reeling from Kaine’s assault, and the designer drug Nuke remains a big problem. Also very cool is that Rogue City works in side-characters like Robo’s partner Anne Lewis and more.
The title garnered all but one nod in our internal vote, which went to…
Silver Game: Star Ocean The Second Story R
You can’t get much different from RoboCop than our ‘Silver’ game for November, Star Ocean The Second Story R. A full remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story, Star Ocean The Second Story R changed up the JRPG’s format with a 2.5D view on the action. Basically, think 2D sprites in a 3D world, similar to other recently released role-players like Octopath Traveller.
Though of course, in the case of Star Ocean, we’re talking about an adventure in a sci-fi universe.
Star Ocean The Second Story R
Release date: November 2nd, 2023
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Switch, PC
Publisher: Square-Enix
Developer: tri-Ace
This new version is a remake, but fans shouldn’t look for it to deviate too far from the classic. While Star Ocean The Second Story R will have new content, fans can reportedly expect everything they remember from the 1998 original to be included as well.
Obviously the biggest difference with the “r” version is graphically, as it looks to sport a significant extra kick in the pants when it comes to looks. But that’s not all, as there are also new mechanics for combat to explore. Want more? How about both Japanese and English voice-acting, and a new score that doesn’t take the place of what you might remember. Yep, you get to pick which one you prefer.
