Expect some big changes as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’s “zombies” mode changes the game from what fans are used to.
Modern Zombies
For the first time in a Modern Warfare title, this year’s MWIII will pack a zombies mode in with its signature hard-hitting campaign and multiplayer modes. But the game’s development teams aren’t simply adding a new coat of paint, as this undead side-story is an epic unto itself.
First, and before we get into anything else, the narrative sounds pretty slick. This won’t be an ‘all new’ zombies story, as it definitely does continue the “Dark Aether” tale framed by the the co-op chaos from past games. But for the first time, zombies actually ties into the base Modern Warfare universe. So you’ll find Task Force 141’s Soap, SSO Laswell, and the villainous Zakhaev all included.
Second, expect a lot of zombies. Like a lot of zombies, as Activision says to expect “massive hordes” in the “largest Call of Duty Zombies map ever”. The official site also says that fans will be teaming up not just with one squad of allies, but multiple squads in the chaos of the infected city they’re sieging.
And finally, while we don’t see any of this in the teaser trailer, players won’t just be fighting zombies. A force of hired guns will be on the scene, carrying out the orders of Zakhaev and under the direct command of one Jack Fletcher.
Got all that? Now watch the following, and try not to get pumped for what this fresh (but still rotten) zombies experience will offer.
For the first time in Call of Duty history, Zombies is coming to the Modern Warfareuniverse in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Developed by Treyarch in collaboration with Sledgehammer Games, Modern Warfare Zombies will take players to the largest Zombies map ever, set in an open-world experience where squads will be challenged to take on the undead in Operation Deadbolt.
Activision press release
Pre-orders, now with 100% more Zombie Ghost
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III launches on November 10th for Xbox and PlayStation platforms, and the PC. If you pre-order the game now though, you’re in for a little extra ‘zombies’-themed fun, in the way of a special skin for fan-favorite Task Force 141 hard-nose Ghost. Or at least, what used to be Ghost, as this skin is a zombie version of the rough and tumble Brit.
It doesn’t look like that plays into the campaign of MWIII’s ‘zombies’, so it doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing Ghost turn into a ravenous revenant, but it’s kinda neat looking regardless. Also as a cool twist, you’ll be able to make use of the skin in MWII and Warzone when Season 06 starts, before carrying him over to MWIII in November.
Those pre-orders are open now of course, for all versions of Modern Warfare III. And if you’d like to read more about all of the above, hit the official Call of Duty Blog, here.
