Warhammer’s Age of Sigmar gets a real-time strategy title with Realms of Ruin

The new age is dawning for Warhammer’s Fantasy Battles in the property’s upcoming RTS from Frontier Developments, Realms of Ruin.

Stormcast vs Kruleboyz

If you’re not a core fan, you might not be aware that Warhammer’s high fantasy universe has changed significantly. That came by way of an event that reforged its world, ushering in The Age of Sigmar. And that, in turn, brought quite a few significant changes to the races and factions that fans knew and loved.

While that updating is something that has already made its way into the video game space, it arguably still isn’t as readily visible as the classic Olde World is. But Frontier Developments will be looking to change that with Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin.

Realms of Ruin will be a RTS, which might be a first for the property, will offer both single and multiplay. The developer points out that the campaign will be a full blown “cinematic” crusade, but has so far gone much deeper into the online, versus mode.

Players will be able to take on each other in 1 vs 1 style, in what’s described as a “tug-of-war” over the map. The armies battling over that though, won’t be static assets, as Frontier says each one “has different strengths and weaknesses that evolve over the course of a battle”.

In the first look at the title’s multiplayer, fans can get a general idea of what playing as the Stormcast Eternals and Orruk Kruleboyz will entail. That incudes both starting armies, and advanced units that seem to only become available as matches play out.

Here’s that trailer:

In Realms of Ruin’s multiplayer matches, the goal is to control more Victory Points than the opponent, draining their score down to zero in quickfire and exciting games. Players will fight across multiple fronts as they capture Arcane Conduits around the map and strengthen their armies by building Bastions in these locations, accumulating more resources as they push towards the annihilation of their enemies. Unlocking additional tiers of the tech tree enables each faction to unleash their deadliest and most visually spectacular squads, resulting in a furious, ever-changing tug-of-war to control the map. Frontier Developments press release

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin is set to debut for the PC (via Steam ad Epic), as well as the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, but so far doesn’t have a release date. You might expect it sooner than later though, as it’s both wish-listable and marked as “coming soon” for all of the above.
